Taipei temperatures reached 38.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, a record high for the year. The high temperatures have led to an increase of heat exhaustion cases across Taiwan. The Central Weather Bureau will begin to issue excessive heat warnings in June.
The heat and high temperature is posing more and more challenges for residents in Taiwan. Those who have to work outside under the sun are at higher risk of heat exhaustion. The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said that it will begin to issue an excessive heat warning starting June. The Central Weather Bureau will issue a yellow light warning if the temperatures for the next two days are projected to reach above 36 degrees, an orange light warning for three consecutive days above 36 or a single day with temperatures above 38 degrees and the CWB will issue a red light warning for three consecutive days with projected temperatures above 38 degrees.
The excessive heat warning will be issued in yellow, orange, and red lights. We will issue warnings at 5pm on the day prior, and the warnings will be based on our observations and our forecast.
The weather bureau began a discussion last year with the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Labor on the proper method of issuing warnings. The warning threshold is set at 36 degrees Celsius because humans are at higher risk of heat exhaustion at that temperature. The excessive heat warning will be issued at 5pm on the days prior to the incoming high temperatures, and will be adjusted on the fly when the actual temperature differs from the forecast. The bureau also predicts that the much anticipated raining season is approaching, and that northern Taiwan will see rain starting Thursday.
We estimate that the monsoon season will arrive next week and the rain will move down south across Taiwan. Starting next week, the weather in different regions of Taiwan will be unstable due to the rain and the low air pressure.
The weather bureau predicts there is a chance of continuous rain in the summer. The current forecast predicts that all regions will see rain starting next Monday.
