The skywalk at the Siaogangshan Skywalk Park opened last month and has already attracted nearly 200,000 visitors. But the skywalk closes at 6pm, and there has been a rise in break ins, after hours. City officials say since the skywalk opened in mid February, there have been 11 nighttime break ins.
This group of visitors was stopped at the entrance of the steps as part of security checks because the place they were standing can be entered only if they have bought tickets. This is part of the skywalk at Siaogangshan Skywalk Park. The skywalk is only open until 6pm, but these visitors have hopped the railing and trespassed. They got caught.
When our security company saw this kind of reaction, they sent staff to the location. Our bureau with the police will inspect and forbid (the behavior).
In the duration of two hours from 8pm to 10pm one night, city police authorities issued 11 advisories against night trespassing on the skywalk at the Siaogangshan Skywalk Park. The tourism bureau says the park grounds are free for the public to roam. But the skywalk has opening and closing hours. Since the skywalk was officially opened, there have been frequent instances of people breaking in and entering, and setting off the infrared sensor alarms.
We always find people at night breaking into our skywalk. When we discovered this, at its entrance, we set up a warning sign with penalties detailed.
The tourism bureau says it will add surveillance cameras and put up barriers. The penalty for a nighttime intruder is NT$6,000. Some intruders will post online pictures they have taken while they are illegally on the skywalk. Tourism authorities appeal to the public that such actions send the wrong message. In the future, the city government will again review whether the skywalk should be opened at night.
