ACADEMICIANS CRITICIZE CONTROL YUAN'S IMPEACHMENT ON FORMER PRESIDENT WONG WITHOUT TRIAL|翁啟惠遭彈劾 逾60位院士批監院未審先判

After former Academia Sinica President Wong Chi-huey was indicted by prosecutors for the OBI Pharma scandal, he was impeached by the Control Yuan and forwarded to the Public Functionary Disciplinary Sanction Commission. On July 8, over 60 Academia Sinica Academicians made a joint statement, condemning the Control Yuan for its ruling without trial. On July 8, it was reported that over 60 Academia Sinica Academicians issued a joint statement, suggesting that the Control Yuan adopted the prosecutors' partial accusations and impeached Wong when the court was still trying the case. They criticized the Control Yuan for its ruling without trial, which was neither reasonable nor fair. ==CHEN LAN-BO Academia Sinica Academician== The Control Yuan's impeachment is based on the indictment, which shows no due process. The Control Yuan should not have partially adopted the prosecutors' indictment, and that's why many Academia Sinica Academicians disagree with it. Control Yuan members responded that the impeachment is based on the Civil Servant Work Act, which has nothing to do with the prosecutors' indictment. ==CHANG KUEI-MEI Control Yuan Member== I think they are two different things because the court will deal with the indictment and the Public Functionary Disciplinary Commission will handle the impeachment. Rather than on the Criminal Act, the impeachment is based on the Civil Servant Work Act, so it is very clear in the legal system. At first, 70 Academia Sinica Academicians' names were on the signature condemning the Control Yuan, but Tseng Chih-lang said his name was put on the signature without his consent, adding that the proposal initiator Chen Lan-bo shouldn't have done it. ==TSENG CHIH-LANG Academia Sinica Academician== He shouldn't have done it because I didn't agree to put my name on their petition. Given that the Control Yuan dealt with the case based on the rule of law, I have no comment on this at all. Chen Lan-bo apologized to Tseng Chih-lang for this, saying that he carelessly sent the list which had not been fully confirmed and that he would issue another statement after reconfirming the list. The contents of the new statement would remain unchanged. Besides condemning Control Yuan's roughness, he also looked forward to a fair trial for Wong Chi-huey.
