After results of the first round of France's presidential election were announced, left-wing supporters congregated in the Place de la Bastille in a demonstration against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, resulting in clashes with riot police. Meanwhile, two of the losing candidates have called on their supporters to vote for Emmanuel Macron in the second round.
As the election results became clear around 8 PM local time, left-wing supporters who had congregated at the Place de la Bastille, where the French Revolution broke out in 1789, grew restless and eventually violent. The demonstrators took out their frustration on the riot police, resulting in physical altercations. Some threw firecrackers and bottles.

I don't want to leave behind a world of extremism to my children.
==VOTER==
I think they'll avoid Le Pen. They don't want her to be president.
Losing candidates Benoît Hamon of the Socialist Party and François Fillon of the Republicans both said in their concession speeches that they will support centrist newcomer Emmanuel Macron. Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon has noT said who he will support.
==BENOÎT HAMON Socialist Party Candidate==
There is no other choice but to oppose the far right by voting for Macron.
==FRANÇOIS FILLON Republican Candidate==
I will like to ask everyone to oppose the Front Nationale, oppose the far right with their votes and vote for Macron.
There were 47 million eligible voters for this election, with turnout reaching 80% as it did in 2012. Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon saw a surge in popularity that put him on par with major-party candidate Fillon. The currently ruling Socialist Party only received 6.2% of the vote, a performance on the level of the minor parties. Pre-election polling showed that employment, the economy, anti-terrorism, and security were the most important issues to the French electorate. After a terrorist attack on the French police three days before the vote, 60,000 armed service members and police were mobilized to guard voting places across France. The state of emergency imposed after the attack has not been lifted, making this France's first presidential election to take place under a state of emergency.
