In Taiwan under the Basic Labor Law, employees are entitled to 8 weeks of paid maternity leave, comparatively shorter to many other countries. The question of extended paid maternity leave has been discussed but remains unchanged. Standard Chartered bank, an international company announced that all female employees will be getting 20 weeks of paid maternity leave effective from this month. On Apr. 11, Standard Chartered Bank in Taiwan announced that from April it would give 20 weeks of paid maternity leave to its staff. This is longer than Taiwan's statutory Basic Labor Law of 8 weeks. ==MS. HSU== I'm shocked. That it so good. ==MS. SHEN=== I live in Hong Kong not Taiwan and in Hong Kong the minimum is 130 days. Standard Chartered Taiwan said that globally it had implemented 20 weeks paid maternity leave. In China there were 6 months, so 20 weeks was already below the standard. There has been discussion on lengthening paid maternity leave in Taiwan, but without clarifying where the wages should come from-- the government or the employer. According to MOL statistics, 20 percent of countries have 18 weeks or over paid maternity leave. 51 percent have 14 weeks paid leave and only 14 percent of countries have less than 12 weeks. If, like Standard Chartered they pay it all, that's good, but for other companies, if the country has to foot the bill, will it be cut from the childcare budget ? The financial resources for doing this is the most important topic to discuss. Womens' groups say that European experience shows that extending maternity leave makes it harder for women to re-enter the workplace. So aside from extending maternal leave, creating a family friendly and welcoming working environment and assisting women to re-enter to workplace is also an important topic.
