POULTRY STALL HOLDERS LAY IN EXTRA STOCKS TO COVER BAN|

The Council of Agriculture announced that all transport and slaughter of poultry would be halted for seven days. However, some types of poultry were exempt from the ban. Yesterday Feb. 17, poultry stores in markets had poultry for sale at the same price as previously. Many stalls had stocked up on extra supplies. In Hualien, some prices have risen and stall holders felt that the price of chicken would rise over the next two weeks. At the Jianguo market, poultry stall holders have full supplies of chicken and duck. At the mention of the seven-day ban to halt the spread of avian 'flu, they quickly emphasize that their goods are all safe. The effect on fresh chicken is minimal although there may be a small price rise. ==MR. CHEN stall holder== You have to get in a few more supplies, if the electric slaughterhouse doesn't kill so many chickens, there will be fewer, I can't get any more stocks and they can't give me any more stock. Those most affected by the ban are free-range chicken and muscovy duck farmers. The stall holders say the policy is meaningless, except to raise market prices. ==Mr. JI stall holder== It's not just stopping the slaughter, it's stopping business, there is still avian flu. In Hualien, the price of chicken rose from NT$90 a kilogram to around NT$100 per kilogram. The food industry is concerned about getting supplies for the coming week and is busy ordering from stalls. ==RESTAURANT OWNER== Now there no chicken, right? That's right. So, what can we do? I don't know. I have to take a holiday. Every year there is avian flu, in the past, there has been a transport and slaughter halt of four days, which is now extended to a seven -day ban. Yunlin poultry sellers think that any measure that calms consumers is a good thing. ==POULTRY SELLER== You know, if you say you buy it today and then tomorrow an avian flu outbreak is reported, then you will just have to go on culling sick birds forever. If you stop transport and slaughter for seven days, we are fine and we will cooperate. Poultry sellers are more worried about the reaction after the ban is lifted, if the epidemic continues they worry that the market price will soar and no-one will buy anyway. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
