During US President-elect Donald Trump's exclusive interview with "Fox News Sunday", Trump questioned whether the United States should be bound by the "one China" policy. Taiwan is not a source of leverage, it's a close partner of the United States. Taiwan is the ninth-largest trading partner of the United States. Bargaining that away is not something that this administration believes is in our best interest. Earnest stated the U.S.'s adherence to the one-China policy has advanced the U.S. maintaining close trade partnership with Taiwan and constructive relationship with China. He further pointed out on the issues of climate change and Iran nuclear agreement, the U.S. would not have succeeded without China's cooperation. ==JOSH EARNEST White House Spokesperson== We certainly don't agree with the Chinese on everything, but where common ground does exist, we've been able to make progress in a way that benefits the American people and benefits the Chinese people, and when it comes to climate change, benefits the planet. That kind of progress is much more difficult if tensions are heightened around our one-China policy.
