TSMC, GIANT CHAIRS TURN DOWN PRESIDENTIAL ADVISOR POSTS|

The Presidential Office announced a list of 20 senior advisors to the president. However, following the resignations of Peng Ming-min and Kao Chun-Ming. TSMC chairman Morris Chang and Giant Bicycle Chair King Liu also confirmed that they have resigned. Presidential Office spokesperson Alex Huang said President Tsai respected their decisions. In a press statement, TSMC said its Chair Morris Chang has turned down the title of presidential advisor, saying that it is not appropriate for him to take the position as TSMC is an international business with around 80% overseas customers. Giant Bicycles Chair King Liu also confirmed that he has declined the position as well. ==KING LIU, Giant Bicycles Chair== I'm already 82. I will soon be retired, so I don't think it's appropriate for me to be a senior advisor. Also, businessmen should stick to doing business. It's simpler that way. Some speculated that their resignations may be due to China's claim that they will take actions against pro-DPP Taiwan businesses. The Presidential Office said in response that politics should stay out of business. ==ALEX HUANG Presidential Office Spokesperson== If we allow politics to interfere with business and ask businesses to take a certain political stance, the legal rights and benefits of businesses, as well as their willingness to invest may be at risk. This is not consistent with our policy of cross-strait peace. We do not want to see that. Four of the 20 presidential advisors have resigned since the announcement of the list. Chang and Liu are the only two industry representatives on the list. This may be a warning sign for Taiwan's industries. ==PANG CHIEN-KUO, Prof. Grad. Inst. of Nat'l Dev. and Mainland China Studies CCU== I must say that the Tsai administration's handling of cross-strait relations can seem perfunctory. This made businesses think that the government is not really helpful in facilitating positive exchanges. Researchers said that the top priority is to create a better environment for industries so that businesses can prosper. TRANSLATED BY:CHRISTINA LIU
