The second half of 2016 saw several high profile cases of collective redundancy, such as that of TransAsia, V Air and the KMT. According to government statistics, as of the end of October, the year of 2016 has seen more than 200 counts of such cases, and in October alone, 43 cases of mass termination were filed.
In the second half of 2016, the abrupt dissolution of TransAsia Airways and V Air, as well as the restructuring of KMT, have shifted attention towards how well their employees will be taken care of. According to Ministry of Labor statistics, as of the end of October, more than 200 cases of mass redundancy have been filed, with 43 in October alone, which was higher than September's 14 counts and last October's 32.

When the number of employees being terminated exceeds a certain number, the company is required to submit a mass redundancy plan for government review. Take TransAsia Airways, for example, such a plan was submitted on November 22nd as appropriate under the law. So far, the number of companies filing for mass redundancy this year has been higher than the past, yet the total number of people affected is 431, which hasn't seen an increase.
But the number hasn't taken into account TransAsia employees. Currently in Taiwan, employees are protected by the Protective Act for Mass Redundancy; however, some lawyers question the effectiveness of the law.

The law does not require any evidence to be included in a mass redundancy plan. Without evidence, the government or labor representatives cannot tell if a reasonable ground does exist for terminating large numbers of employees in one strike.
Wu emphasized the importance of unionization for workers. He also called on the Ministry of Labor to amend relevant laws. In response, the Labor Ministry pledged a comprehensive overhaul to dices necessary amendments that will ensure the integrity of workers' rights.

勞動部說明,正在進行協商的復興航空案,人數還沒納入統計。按照現行法規,有「大量解僱勞工保護法」的保障,但有律師認為,這些規範,能否真正保護勞工,還有疑慮。
