In the Hong Kong election held last week, the pro-establishment camp secured 40 seats, while the opposition parties won 30 seats. The political power dynamic in the legislative council has not changed much. However, the opposition parties has retained the veto power by securing a one-third minority. Young people demanding democratic self-determination who came to prominence after the Occupation Movement have won 6 seats in this election.
Young people in Hong Kong are making their voices heard. The record high voter turnout of 58% in the Hong Kong legislative election is primarily contributed to by the young generation, who is calling for democratic self-determination. Six candidates under 40 were elected this time, including the youngest ever, 23-year-old Nathan Law, from Demosistō, who came to prominence after the Occupation Movement;Lau Siu Lai from Democracy Groundwork; Eddie Chu from Land Justice League; Cheng Chung-tai from Civic Passion; Sixtus Baggio Leung and Yau Wai-ching from Youngspiration.

Beijing needs to understand that we no longer believe in One Country, Two Systems and Hong Kong Basic Law. Our next step will be a separation from China.
==NATHAN LAW, Lawmaker-Elect, Demosistō==
Voting rate of Hong Kong Island actually is larger than... Its increase is larger than the other constituencies. That means there are a lot more people coming out to vote because they see new choices.
Before the Occupation Movement, democratic self-determination or Hong Kong Independence were not widely discussed. The failure of the Occupation Movement has crushed the democracy movement in Hong Kong, and recent Causeway Bay Books disappearances have also shown that Beijing has tightened its control over Hong Kong. The groups who have stood up against the Chinese parallel traders in Hong Kong have gained the support from the citizens. The fact that some pro-independence candidates were banned from the election has allowed these young activists to gain a foothold in power.

[We can] anticipate more street... for demonstrations, more pressure to be put on Beijing to adopt a more tolerant and pro-democracy policies in Hong Kong.
The young generation's victory in this election may come as a shock for Beijing. Now that the non-pro-establishment camp has secured enough seats to veto in the legislative council, it will probably be more difficult for Beijing to force any political reforms in Hong Kong.
