Groups Protest Pelosi's Visit Outside Legislature
U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the legislature on Aug. 3. Numerous pro-unification groups protested outside to express their discontent with her visit, and were watched over by at least 400 police officers. Meanwhile, pro-independence groups took advantage of the situation to try and sneak into restricted zones.
“Pelosi, beat it!”New Party members gathered outside the legislature on Aug. 3 to express their discontent with the visit of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Chen Ming-chih, Chief, Zhongzheng First Precinct, Taipei City PD: “The assembly on Qingdao East Road was not authorized and violates the Assembly and Parade Act. You are ordered to disband.”
The police said the protesters had not applied to assemble in advance, so they were ordered to leave. Members of the Chinese Unification Promotion Party were seen taking part in the protest.
Chang An-lo, Chairperson, Chinese Unification Promotion Party: “She clearly knows she's sitting on a powder keg, but she's still insisted on coming. Once she leaves, we're going to be the ones paying the price. Once she's gone, will William Lai, Su Tseng-chang, and Tsai Ing-wen be willing to die for Taiwan?”
There were at least 50 protesters outside the legislature, and there were scuffles. “We welcome Americans to come and support Taiwan!”Pro-independence groups took advantage of pro-unification groups expressing their viewpoints to try and sneak into a restricted zone. The police stopped them and dragged them away. There was a heavy police presence at the scene, and the director-general of the National Police Agency was also present to supervise.
Huang Ming-chao, Director-General, National Police Agency: “Taipei asked other units outside its jurisdiction to provide support based on its needs.”
At least 400 police officers were sent to guard the area around the legislature. There were also traffic controls in place. Another 1,000 were sent to the American Institute in Taiwan and Taipei Guest House. There were police officers from the Taipei City Police Department, First Special Police Corps, Thunder Squad, and Criminal Investigation Bureau. Numerous police officers were seen at multiple intersections. They were on hand to maintain public order during Pelosi's visit.
