The first snowfall of the new year took place at Yilan's Taiping Mountain on Jan. 1. Snow fell over the Beech Trail at approximately 7:45 a.m. Although the snowfall lasted less than half an hour, visitors who were hoping for snow were delighted.
The trees lining the trail were dusted in snow, creating a winter wonderland scene. Although temperatures in the Taiping Mountain National Forest Recreation Area dropped below zero degrees Celsius during the past two days, there was no snow due to insufficient water vapor. The conditions finally became optimal for snow on the morning of Jan. 1, when workers noticed snow falling over the Beech Trail. Those visitors who had come hoping to see snow were overjoyed.
