Woman Caught Trying to Smuggle Protected Bird Eggs into Taiwan|3

A woman was recently caught trying to smuggle endangered bird eggs into Taiwan. The woman, surnamed Yeh, left Taiwan in March. Customs workers found 90 yellow-naped amazon parrot eggs hidden in her suitcase when she reentered Taiwan. The black market price for a young bird is around NT$200,000. The woman was questioned and charged with violating animal protection laws.

Customs workers at Taoyuan International Airport recently caught a woman trying to smuggle 90 yellow-naped and red-lored amazon parrot eggs into Taiwan. She has been charged with violating the Wildlife Conservation Act and Statute for Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Disease.

The woman, a ROC citizen surnamed Yeh, was found to be hiding 90 yellow-naped and red-lored amazon parrot eggs in her suitcase.

Yellow-naped and red-lored amazon parrots are endangered due to deforestation and poaching. They are listed, respectively, on Appendix I and Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Hatchlings fetch NT$200,000 each on the black market.

Many of the endangered birds on the convention's Appendix I are on the list because of deforestation and poaching.

The Wild Bird Society of Taoyuan says Taiwan has no endemic parrots and just three of the 75 foreign birds species found on Taiwan are parrots. Therefore, breeding parrots in Taiwan could have severe environmental ramifications.
