Taiwan's top gymnastics athlete Lee Chih-kai won his first gold medal at the 8th Senior ART Asian Championships in the men's artistic individual all-around category, edging out two competitors from Mainland China. This is the first time an athlete from Taiwan wins a gold medal at an Asian championship. Team Chinese Taipei, Taiwan's national team, has also won its first ever team bronze medal.
Hailed as Taiwan's Pommel Horse Prince, Lee Chih-kai is currently competing at the 8th Senior ART Asian Championships in Mongolia. Lee scored 15.033 in the men's pommel horse competition. He also performed well in the still rings and floor exercise.
Lee's performances in the three categories earned a total of 42.367 points, which put him ahead of the field. The event does not lead to qualification to the Tokyo Olympics, but to Lee, it serves as a preparation for next year's Summer Universiade in Naples, Italy. After competing in vault, parallel bars and high bar on June 20, Lee accumulated a total score of 83.666, allowing him to defeat two Chinese athletes, Hu Xuwei and Liu Rongbing and bag a gold medal. His coach Lin Yu-hsin said that Lee didn't show major mistake in his performances, but he did lose quite a few points in the parallel bars category which led to a total score of less than 84 points, a goal that was set before the competition. The coach said that Lee's performance shows that he has a good chance to perform well in the upcoming 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships and earn qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Lee's gold medal is the first gold medal for Taiwanese gymnast at the Asian championships in 13 years. It is also Taiwan's first ever gold medal in the men's all-around category. Lee will continue to compete in the categories of pommel horse and floor.
Another athlete from the National Taiwan Normal University, Tang Chia-hung, scored 14.367 in the high bar category and proceeded to the final round. Thanks to the strong performances from these two athletes, as a team Taiwan was able to outperform South Korea and win the first-ever bronze medal.
