New College Entrance Exam Score System Coming|

To accommodate the launch of the new 12-year compulsory education syllabus, there will be major changes to college entrance examinations. The current exam and Advanced Subjects Test will change to new formats. However, test distribution channels will be changed from a system of 100 points to a system of a score of 45. The change has stir up many debates.

The new 12-year compulsory education syllabus will be go into effect ahead of the 2019-2020 academic year. This means major changes to the current college entrance system. The current College Entrance Examination and Advanced Subjects Test will be phased out and replaced with newer versions in 2022 for this year's high school sophomores. College application test scores will still be 15 per subject, but will change to a calculation basis of 45 during the exam distribution phase. The 100-point system for subject tests currently in use, meanwhile, will be replaced with a score of 45.

Within every score subset is a score range. An original score in the 15th score subset is equivalent to a score in the 43rd to 45th score subsets, which are the three highest, in the new system. You also have to look at how university departments weigh results to differentiate between applicants.

The College Entrance Examination Center says colleges will still look at subject test scores during the admissions process after the change and this will be enough to differentiate applicants. However, education groups say one or two points can mean the difference between students being accepted or rejected by popular departments and it remains to be seen whether the score-based system will provide enough differentiation.

(The new system with its score of 45) will result in more students with the same score. (Under the new system), Chinese, English and math scores will be used to assess applicants. Chinese and English will no longer be part of the subjects test. This means if you don't do well on the (primary subjects), you can forget about your chances this year. This is something we are very worried about. The exam will really be make or break.

In the future, the college entrance exam will test students on five subjects including Chinese, English and math while the subjects test will test students on seven subjects including physics and chemistry.

The groups say this means students that don't perform well in their primary subjects won't have a chance to make up for it later on. They are therefore calling on the Joint Board of the College Recruitment Commission and College Entrance Examination Center to give the reforms more consideration.
