Yuguang Island is located in Tainan's Anping District, and its Moon Bay has become a popular tourist destination. Tourists go there to swim and watch sunsets. However, many have been wounded by reefs and rocks. Taiwan International Ports Corporation, which oversees the island, says the only suitable activity is walking along the beaches, and tourists should not go into the water.

Many people are playing in the waters surrounding Yuguang Island in Tainan's Anping District. Some are paddling boats, while others are surfing. There are also many barefoot people playing in the water. However, there is a hidden danger here, as the beach is surrounded by sharp reefs and rocks. This summer, 20 people have already been injured by these reefs and rocks.

I was surfing, and I didn't know there were rocks over there and I hurt my body. This has also happened to many of our friends, with some injuring their heads. The rocks are like landmines, you don't know where they are.

Lin Feng-ning, the borough chief of Yuguang Borough, says Yuguang Island's Moon Bay was very safe in the past. Recently, it became a popular spot for photography, and last year the island hosted an arts festival. Rocks used for protecting beaches are blown into the sea during typhoons, and end up injuring people. He hopes authorities can remove the rocks in shallow water to give people a safe place to play.

After Taiwan International Ports Corporation began managing Yuguang Island and its beaches, we began progressively carrying out related removal work. Right now, we allocate NT$3 million a year to commission Tainan's Anping District Office to carry out work related to the cleanliness and protection of Yuguang Island's beaches.

Taiwan International Ports Corporation says the waters surrounding the island are subject to the Commercial Port Law, which prohibits playing in the water. Moreover, there are no lifeguards or other safety measures on the scene. It says it will discuss ways to remove the rocks with the Tainan City Government, and in the meantime no one should play in the water.
