Aside from malware infected digital hardware, fraud organizations have also come up with a brand-new scam. Recently, someone has been sending out delivery failure notification text messages from a courier company to steal personal information from people. Both experts and police advice: never open documents from unknown senders or click on a link to submit personal data on unknown websites.
Delivery failure notification texts from courier companies have been making the rounds. The texts ask recipients to click on a link and submit their personal information on the website that opens. However, these texts are from scam organizations and clicking on links may allow them to steal personal data from your phone.
There is an opportunity here. Android is a more open operating framework and more susceptible to infection. Malicious programs may be downloaded in the background without the user knowing once they click on a third-party link. Once the program is installed and running, it can steal your personal information.
Police say there have been similar scams involving late payment texts from credit card companies. If you believe a text may be real, the best way to protect yourself is to get the company's contact information from its official website and contact them directly for clarification.
Banks or courier companies have their own mobile apps and customer service hotlines. You should use these when you have a question or want to verify if a message is real. Text or email notifications usually contain short links. Think twice before clicking on these.
Apart from verifying that texts are real, police say users should never install apps from text messages. These apps may allow fraud rings to steal personal information off your phone.
