Fatty liver disease has become a common lifestyle disease. A new hospital survey has found one in four people in Taiwan suffer from fatty liver disease. Moreover, even thin people can develop the condition too.
Many office workers eat out for all three meals of the day. They typically have lunchboxes delivered for their midday meal, as there is a wide variety of options and it's convenient.
I typically select ones with larger portions of vegetables, and try not to eat fried meat.
I go for plain cooked meals, as they usually don't contain so much fried or breaded foods.
A new Taipei Municipal Wanfang Hospital survey has found that one in four people in Taiwan suffer from fatty liver disease, and 40 percent of fatty liver disease sufferers typically eat out for all three meals. The most common type of meal is chicken leg or pork cutlet lunchboxes. Doctors say fatty liver disease is a warning sign, and it is linked to obesity. Moreover, fatty liver disease sufferers are also 1.5 times more likely than people without the condition to develop diabetes and 1.6 times more likely to develop hypertension. A failure to control the condition may lead to steatohepatitis, liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and even liver cancer.
About nearly 10 percent of cases become liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Ten percent of people with inflammation develop liver fibrosis. Everyone knows that 3 percent of cirrhosis cases become liver cancer every year.
Doctors also remind the public that even thin people can develop fatty liver disease. Only consuming fruit for dinner to lose weight and not exercising may lead to fructose buildup in the liver, which can then develop into fatty liver. There is no medicine to treat fatty liver, so people can only avert the condition through balanced diets and exercise.
