The wreckage of a missing Black Hawk helicopter along with two bodies on board were found on Apr. 12, 2 months after it went missing. The helicopter's black box was also located. The salvage mission was completed with the help of National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology and a private company. It was the first one in Taiwan to take place at more than 1,000 meters underwater.

The exploration vessel slowly berths at National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology's dock. It had traveled 17 hours to take part in the effort to salvage a Black Hawk helicopter that went missing on Feb. 5, and returned to Kaohsiung after completing its mission. The Aviation Safety Council says the Polaris was sent to the location where the helicopter crashed in February, and used sonar to determine the location of the wreckage. It then conducted tests to make sure the wreckage would not be damaged when lifted out of the sea. On Apr. 12, the wreckage was retrieved.

The wreckage was lying on the seabed, so we had to carefully tow it up away from the seabed while ensuring it maintained its integrity.

Polaris is a multi-functional exploration ship jointly operated by NKUST and Dragon Prince Hydro-Survey Enterprise Co. It made five trips, four to ascertain the location of the wreckage and set it in place. On the last trip, it deployed an unmanned remotely operated underwater vehicle to salvage the wreckage. NKUST professor Wen Zhan-quan, who has participated in seven salvage operations, says this mission was the first one to take place at a depth of more than 1,000 meters underwater.

The entire bottom is a reef, so the wreckage was obscured, forcing us to search blindly for it. Actually, the location where the wreckage was found was only 200 meters from the place where we started.
The water pressure at a depth of 1,000 meters is equivalent to 100 atmospheric pressure units. Here, it is one unit. That meant that when we went down there, we faced 100 atmospheric pressure units.

The salvage team managed to complete its mission despite these difficulties. Meanwhile, the barge carrying the helicopter's wreckage has already reached NKUST's dock.
