Israel has removed the security devices it installed at the entrance of a sacred shrine in Jerusalem, and as thousands of Muslims rushed in to pray for the first time in nearly two weeks, clashes erupted.
Israeli police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, Palestinians threw stones. A local humanitarian group says over 100 Palestinians have been injured, some by rubber bullets and beatings. It says several people suffered broken bones. Tensions began to escalate when Israeli troops closed one of the gates, as large numbers of worshippers tried to enter. Israeli police say they only responded after Muslim prayers threw stones at officers. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is holy to both Muslims and Jews, and has been at the center of a standoff between Israel and Palestine since Israel put up security installations at the site two weeks ago. The gates were reopened following an 11-day Muslim prayer boycott.
