PRO AND AGAINST SAME-SEX MARRIAGE GROUPS REACT TO CONSTITUTIONAL RULE|挺同團體籲速修法 反同團體不滿釋憲

As Taiwan is now set to become to first country in Asia to legalize same sex marriage, both sides on the issue respond to the news rather differently. While an excited crowd supporting the decision urges the government to speed up what needs be done next, those against the decision call yesterday a humiliating day that will go down in history. Holding banners and shouting slogans, 30 same-sex marriage opponents waited for the Constitutional Court's interpretation on same-sex marriage outside the Judicial Yuan. On May.24, Taiwan's Constitutional Court ruled that current laws defining unions as between a man and a woman are unconstitutional. The government should amend relevant laws within two years to protect same-sex couples' rights. After hearing the court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage through webcast, opponents of same-sex marriage were upset. They were glad that Taiwan has taken a step forward in protecting LGBT rights. Satisfied with the court ruling as same-sex marriage supporters were, they called for the Legislative Yuan to pass amendments to the Civil Code as soon as possible.
