VIETNAM MAY ALLOW FORMOSA PLASTIC TO OPERATE AGAIN|台塑付5億美元賠償金 越南考慮允復工

The Vietnamese government is reportedly about to let Formosa Plastics Group resume operations a year after the Taiwanese company was found discharging heavily polluted water and subsequently fined 500 million us dollars. Yet on Monday, protesters once again poured on to the streets after the word got out. Last April, Formosa Plastics Group's overseas iron and steel plant in north central Vietnam caused serious river pollution. Over one hundred metric tons of dead fish were floating along the 200 kilometers coast line in Ha Tinh Province. Local residents accused the plant illegally discharged pollutants into river. Vietnamese environmental officials recently were checking the plant's wastewater and air quality to see if the plant qualifies for operation resumption. ==HOANG DUONG TUNG, Dep. Dir.-Gen., Vietnam Environment Administration== Formosa Plastics Group installed automatic alert system on boilers to control air pollution. Emission of exhaust gas will also be recorded. As I read the data, they completely meet standards set by the Vietnam Environment Administration. The pollution incident frustrated local residents and caused large-scale demonstration. Formosa Plastics Group ended up paying US$500 million compensation. Although Vietnam government intends for the plant to resume its operation, but on March 3, thousands of residents demonstrated again in Ha Tinh Province. The government's outsourced research institute emphasized the pollution level has been improved. ==MR. According to Vietnam's state-run television, the Environment Administration said that the central coast line has restored its ecology, the Formosa Plastics Group's previous violations were meeting up to the standards set by the government.
