INTERNATIONAL COVENANT REVIEW MEETING MAKES 78 COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS|兩公約國際審查會議 廢死.同性婚入法熱議

On Jan. 20, the 3-day review meeting of the second national report on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights came to an end. International experts attending the meeting made 78 comments and recommendations towards the discussed issues. They said that Taiwan should abolish capital punishment to achieve an international standard on human rights. They also said that they are glad to see Taiwan planning to legalize same-sex marriage. ==LIN MEI-CHU Minister without Portfolio== The report will become the basis for us to promote human rights. The 3-day review meeting of the second national report on ICCPR and ICESCR ended on Jan. 20. During the meeting, issues such as transitional justice, personal freedom, the death penalty, and diverse families were discussed. Seventy-eight comments and suggestions were made by the committee. Raising banners outside the meeting, anti same-sex marriage groups expressed their opposition to the committee's opinion on the issue. ==MS. LIU anti same-sex marriage group member== If homosexual people seek professional treatment, they will be punished. This is a great oppression. Secondly, parents and children will suffer great oppression in terms of their rights to education. ==LIN HSIU YI Secretary-General of Awakening Foundation== The government should pass the amendments to the Civil Code as soon as possible. It should not make a special law because it provides a lower level of protection than amending the Civil Code. It should not use a restricted and conditional Civil Code to patronize its people and deprive them of their rights. The Covenants Watch said the government had too many excuses, was always hiding behind the wall of public opinion and mutual consensus when it came to promoting human rights. They hope that the government can be more decisive in protecting human rights.
