The 75-year-old American singer, songwriter and poet, Bob Dylan, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Oct 13. He is the first musician to receive this award. The decision came as a surprise to many.
Widely acclaimed for his anti-war music and human rights activism in the 60s, composer and poet Bob Dylan has been crowned the laureate for the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy recognized Dylan's creative achievements in the field of literature and subculture in the past 60 years.

Bob Dylan is a great poet. It's as simple as that. He's a great poet in the great English language traditions, stretching from Milton and Blake onwards. His repertoire stretches from folk songs in the Appalachians, Delta blues in the South, all the way to Rimbaud of French Modernism, and he handles this heritage in the absolutely original way. No one's ever done anything like him.
Dylan has won 11 Grammy's, 1 Golden Globe, and in 2001 he received an Oscar for Best Original Song for the movie "Wonder Boys". Dylan's early songs such as "Blowing in the Wind", "The Times They Are A-Changin" were the anthems of the human rights and anti-war movements during the 60s in the United States. He has also been recognized as the spokesperson for the counter-culture movement during that time. In 1965, Dylan began transitioning from folk to rock music and has changed the traditional categorization of pop music. In the past half century, his poetry and music have inspired many, from the Beatles to Bruce Springsteen.

I think it's extremely exciting. I think it's a bold move for the Nobel. It's no doubt going to generate controversy over what counts as literature because it is a Nobel in Literature.
Since 1997, Bob Dylan has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature for 6 times but has never been considered a strong contender. This is the first Nobel Prize in Literature for the US since Toni Morrison won 23 years ago. Renowned Japanese writer Haruki Murakami has been nominated but lost for the 7th time. However, since Murakami is 67 years old, younger than the average age of the Nobel laureates in the past decade, there is still a good chance that he may win in the future.
