PRESIDENT TSAI: TAIWAN WILL NOT BEND TO PRESSURE FROM CHINA|

As cross-strait relations enter a stalemate, many are looking forward to President Tsai's Double Ten National speech. However, during an interview yesterday with the Wall Street Journal, Tsai said that she has already shown the greatest flexibility and goodwill that Taiwan could offer in her May inauguration speech. She said, hopefully China won't mistakenly believe that it could bend the Taiwanese people's will with pressure. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on October 4th, President Tsai stressed that her commitment to maintain the status quo in cross-strait relations has not changed, nor has her goodwill. While she stressed that Taiwan will not bend under China's pressure, she also said that there will be no political confrontation with the mainland as the DPP had done when it was last in office. ==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President== I also urge Mainland China not to misunderstand and misjudge the current situation. The will of the Taiwanese people will not be bent by pressure. But I also hope that the two sides could sit down for better communication and for resolving unnecessary misunderstandings as soon as possible. According to Tsai, when she visited Panama in June, China was still willing to show goodwill. Yet Beijing's move at the recent ICAO Assembly made her fear that cross-Strait relations may have returned to its old days, and that a worsening stalemate might be further down the road. Tsai said that her May inauguration speech has shown the greatest flexibility and goodwill Taiwan could offer, and hoped that Beijing respects the decisions and judgment Taiwan has made as a democracy. She urged both sides to remain rational and calm. Experts pointed out that Tsai's remarks implied that her administration's position on cross-Strait relations hasn't changed. ==LIN CHONG-PIN, Former Deputy Chairman of M.A.C.== Her interview yesterday might have taken weight off of her coming Double-Tenth National Speech, which many have been looking forward to. What Tsai said in the interview was true, her goodwill had been reciprocated by Beijing until her inauguration in May. The development afterward has been rather unfortunate, as both sides don't seem to trust each other. During the interview, Tsai was also asked if she plans to meet with her mainland counterpart. In response, Tsai said communication is desirable, but it should not be restricted to readily defined political frameworks. According to Tsai answer's, it could perhaps be concluded that she had not ruled out the possibility of a tete-a-tete with Xi Jinping. Experts said that a meeting may have more of a chance of taking place after China's 19th National Congress next year. TRANSLATED BY:JEFF CHANG
