Wong Chi-Huey prosecuted for bribery in OBI Pharma Case /檢:翁啟惠收3千張浩鼎股票 涉貪起訴

Last year the pharmaceutical company OBI Pharma was accused of insider trading. The former president of the Academia Sinica Wong Chi-huey was suspected by prosecutors of accepting shares from Michael Chang, Chairman of OBI Pharma, in exchange for key technology developed by Wong at the Academia Sinica. Yes, the prosecutors said that 3,000 shares of OBI Pharma were transferred on Dec. 17 to Wong's daughter Wong Yu-shioh, after the technology transfer took place. Shilin District Prosecutors have now charged Wong with bribery. On Jan. 9, Shilin Prosecutors Office charged Wong and others with bribery and corruption. ==CHEN HSI-CHU Chief Prosector, Shihlin District Prosecutors Office== Wong Chi-huey has been charged with corruption as an offense against Article 5, Paragraph 1, sub-paragraph 3 of civil servant law against taking bribes, as well as dereliction of civil servants' duties and behavior. Acceptance of bribes carries a penalty of over seven years in prison. Last year the results of blind tests of OBI Pharma's new pharmaceutical were below expectations, the stock price fell, and the company was reported as having insider trading. Prosecutors investigating found that Michael Chang, Chair of OBI Pharma, tried to obtain Academis Sinica research on synthetic oligosaccharides technology in exchange for stock in OBI Pharma in 2010. Due to doubts by the Ministry of Economic Affairs about OBI Pharmas shares this was delayed until 2011 when Chang successfully bribed Wong with shares and obtained the exclusive research technology. Wong is therefore to be prosecuted, the first president of the Academia Sinica to be listed as a defendant. ==SUN YI-HAN Exec. Sec-Gen. The AS said that Wong is no longer president of the body and so was not affected by civil servant legislation and the work of the Academy was not affected by the incident.
