People With COVID-19 Banned From Voting
Central Election Commission Chairperson Lee Chin-yung delivered a report on epidemic prevention during the nine-in-one. He reaffirmed that people infected with COVID-19 will not be allowed to vote.
The nine-in-one elections will be held on Nov. 26. Central Election Commission Chairperson Lee Chin-yung headed to the legislature on Nov. 17 to deliver a report on epidemic prevention during the elections. He reaffirmed that people infected with COVID-19 will not be allowed to vote. Polling places will not be able to determine whether someone is infected with COVID-19 as there are no lists of infected people, so the CEC will investigate and handle violations after the event. Lee was also asked whether people will be able to wear face masks showing which candidate they support while voting.
Lee Chin-yung, Chairperson, Central Election Commission: “If you're wearing a mask in favor of a candidate, this action may violate campaign regulations, so we advise against it.”
Victor Wang, Commander, Central Epidemic Command Center: “I think everything needs to be based on the procedures at polling places. As to whether someone is reported by others or says he or she is positive, we will ask health authorities to investigate and handle it after the event.”
CECC Commander Victor Wang said if people announce that they have COVID-19 or are reported as having COVID-19 by others, then health authorities will investigate after the event. He called on infected people to isolate at home and not go out. Violators could face up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of NT$2 million. Meanwhile, a legislator asked National Police Agency Director-General Huang Ming-chao how many election gambling cases they have handled and whether there are foreign forces intervening in the election. Huang said the police have handled 32 cases with a monetary value of NT$2.5 million and 59 people have been indicted.
Huang Ming-chao, NPA Director-General: “”
Tang Hui-jane, Legislator (DPP): “”
Which city or county is the place where the most number of cases occurred? Taichung, many of the cases occurred there. The majority are PK bets.
The date of the Chiayi City mayoral election has been postponed, and there are concerns about the additional labor and physical resources that will be required. Lee said the current mayor's term ends on Dec. 24, and the winner will need time to prepare. If the election were to be held on Nov. 26 as scheduled, then there would only be 23 days to prepare for the election, which is not enough. There are special local exams scheduled for Dec. 10 and Dec. 17 has been designated as a missed lesson makeup date. After discussions with local election authorities, Dec. 18 was selected as election day.
