Feitsui Reservoir at Less than 60% Capacity
Northern Taiwan is in the middle of a severe water shortage and Feitsui Reservoir is at less than 60 percent capacity. Water pressure will be reduced at night in Keelung and Xizhi starting Sept. 3.
Keelung is in the middle of a severe water shortage. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced that water pressure will be lowered between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. in Keelung and Xizhi starting Sept. 3. Water supplies remain "green" in other parts of New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Tainan.
Wang Yi-feng, Deputy Director, Water Resources Agency: “Water pressure will be lowered across the Keelung area, including Xizhi and Ruifang. We expect to save 10,000 tons of water per day as long as this is in effect.”
Taiwan did not see any typhoons in July or August and northern Taiwan has received little rain this summer. Water levels at Feitsui Reservoir, which supplies Greater Taipei, fell to 153.48 meters on the 30th, compared to an average of 154.28 meters for this time of year in years past. This was the 17th lowest level in history. While the reservoir still has close to 200 million cubic meters of water, this is 5 million cubic meters less than in previous years and the reservoir is at less than 60 percent capacity.
Chou Bo-kai, Deputy Commissioner, Taipei Feitsui Reservoir Administration: “There was less rain in July and August, but we expect water supplies to remain adequate in the next three months. Rain from the northeast monsoon season accounts for 27 percent of the rainwater collected in the Feitsui Reservoir collection area. We hope the northeast monsoon season will bring the same amount of rain this year as in years past, especially if we don't see any typhoons this year. This would stabilize the water supply.”
Feitsui Reservoir is currently supplying Banqiao with 800,000 tons of water per day and Keelung with 7-80,000 tons of water per day. As long as the water shortage doesn't worsen, Feitsui can keep this up until the end of the year.
