Taichung Schools Setting Own Rules for Suspension of Classes

The Ministry of Education has announced new regulations on the 8th regarding the suspension of classes for junior high and high school students in regards to COVID outbreaks at the school. The Taichung City Government decided not to follow suit.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced new regulations on the 8th regarding the suspension of classes for junior high and high school students in managing COVID outbreaks at the school. All junior high and high school students who have sat near a confirmed COVID case within the vicinity of a 3X3 area will have to take three days of "COVID prevention leave." Students outside of the 3X3 vicinity can still go to school. However, the Taichung City Government has decided not to go by MOE's decision and to have all students within a class take three days of "COVID prevention leave" if any student within the class has been confirmed with COVID.

Yen Chun-chieh, Deputy Director-General, Education Bureau, Taichung: “To keep the quality of education equal for all students in class and to lessen inconvenience for teachers in keeping up with the students' learning progress, Taichung City has decided to go by stricter standards, which is to have all junior high and high school students, including the teacher, take three days of COVID prevention leave.”

The Yunlin County Government, on the other hand, has decided to follow MOE's latest announcements regarding the suspension of classes for junior high and high schools, but they are asking the central government to provide rapid test kits for all students in class, and not just for the students who have sat within the 3X3 vicinity of the COVID case.

Chang Li-shan, Yunlin County Magistrate: “Right now the MOE does not provide free rapid test kits for students outside of the 3X3 vicinity. The central government currently controls the amount of rapid test kits the public can buy, and we are not capable of buying more test kits for students either at the moment. I hope the Central Epidemic Command Center, and the MOE, and provide more test kits for our students to ensure safety. ”

Liu Hsin-li, Principal of Xiutan Elementary School, Yunlin: “There should be an adjustment for each school. We can only deal with the one class that is affected currently, but in our case, we have so many activities that involve bringing students from different classes together.”

The Yunlin County Government explained that for some smaller elementary schools with fewer students, many school activities involve bringing students of different grade levels together. Each school needs to be able to come up with its own COVID prevention leave rule that is most suitable for their situation to protect students fully, local officials said.
