Taiwan began administering the first, and the only batch of Moderna vaccines on June 9, with medical personnel working in hospitals where COVID-19 patients are being treated first in line to receive the shot. The Central Epidemic Command Center expects 70,000 doses, about half of what Taiwan received on May 28 from the US to be injected in three days' time.
Taiwan began administering Moderna COVID-19 vaccines on June 9. Vaccines were delivered to medical institutions and clinics around the country. Central Epidemic Command Center spokesperson Chuang Jen-hsiang said 70,000 doses have been distributed and will be administered in three days' time. National Taiwan University College of Public Health professor Chen Hsiu-hsi said that although the AstraZeneca vaccine has a lower protection rate, it is still effective in preventing severe cases and medical personnel shouldn't insist on receiving the Moderna vaccine. He added that this vaccine, which has a higher protection rate, should be reserved for those medical personnel taking care of patients with severe conditions.

Frontline workers who take care of confirmed cases in emergency rooms or ICUs already had the highest priority among medical personnel. They can choose to get the Moderna vaccine.
Shin Kong Memorial Hospital Deputy Superintendent Hung Tzu-jen said blood clots are a possible side effect of the AZ vaccine, and those medical personnel whom doctors do not recommend receiving the AZ vaccine are also candidates for the Moderna vaccine.
For example, she may be pregnant or have blood clots. Doctors may determine that those with existing risks should wait for the Moderna vaccine.
Taiwan has a very limited number of vaccines, so people may receive two doses of different vaccines. Scholars say a British study showed that the most common adverse effects from mixing vaccines included fever, but there were no serious adverse events. A Spanish study showed that receiving the AZ vaccine as the first dose and the BioNTech vaccine as the second had a higher neutralizing antibody protective effect than that of just one dose of the AZ vaccine.
They found that in people who received a first dose of a carrier vaccine and then a second dose of the BNT vaccine had a higher neutralizing antibody protective effect than that of just one dose of the AZ vaccine. This study tells us that mixing vaccines is possible.
Taiwan has so far received delivery of 150,000 Moderna vaccines, including the aforementioned 70,000. Chuang said two more batches of around 100,000 each are scheduled to arrive before the end of June.
