Taiwan Medical Association members cheered as the result of the World Medical Association Council Session vote was announced. During the virtual session on April 20, participants voted 22 to 1 to support Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly and World Health Organization. The dissenting vote was cast by China.
China’s reason was of course that Taiwan is part of China and that the Chinese government will look after the health of the Taiwanese people. We were of course saddened when we heard that. Our delegation of course presented a complete discourse. This time’s disease prevention results show our government’s disease prevention policies are correct.
The resolution was proposed by the Taiwan Medical Association. It received 13 out of 14 votes during a committee meeting in January, and then passed the council session vote. A final vote will take place at the WMA assembly in October. If it passes, then the WMA will send a letter to the WHO recommending observer status for Taiwan.
I think this will definitely make it easier for us to participate in any international-level organization meeting on medical treatment or health.
The next WHA is scheduled for May. The Australian Taiwanese Friendship Association started a campaign in Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra in support of Taiwan joining the WHO.
The government has already launched the work to get observer status and participate in the WHA. We continue to closely communicate about the related methods with our allies and like-minded countries to drum up support.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the world has affirmed Taiwan’s disease prevention efforts, and diplomatic personnel stationed abroad are communicating with allies and like-minded countries to get their support for Taiwan to receive observer status and participate in the upcoming WHA.
