The traffic jam on the Suez Canal remained as a large container ship has been aground for more than 40 hours. While excavators are working around the clock to try to refloat the vessel, global oil prices have inevitably been affected. Experts say the situation may take days, or even weeks to resolve.
The excavator looks tiny next to the huge container ship as it clears away silt near the prow in an effort to widen the shore. The Ever Given, a 220,000-ton, 400-meter-long ultra-large container ship belonging to Evergreen Marine Corporation, ran aground in the Suez Canal on March 23 due to strong winds and a sandstorm. This caused traffic jams at both ends of the waterway, which connects Europe and Asia. Canal authorities sent tugboats to try and dislodge the ship.

It's a very serious incident. If you think how fragile... it shows you how fragile the global supply chains can be at times and as we rely on shipping to deliver all that medical equipment, the fuel, the food, the other supplies, it's quite a critical moment.
If the Ever Given is placed on end, it would be taller than the 324-meter-high Eiffel Tower. It has currently been stuck in the Suez Canal for over 40 hours, and over 100 cargo ships have been affected and are awaiting a solution. Approximately 12 percent of global trade passes through the canal, along with one million barrels of oil a day. On March 24, the U.S. crude oil price rose by 5.9 percent.
Any time you see any of these crazy market disruptions, it's usually a benefit to the owners of the ships, right both for tankers, container ships, anything that's stuck, but also for the commodity that's being moved.
The global shipping industry and energy supply chain were already reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the blockage of the Suez Canal has exacerbated the situation. Dutch dredging company Boskalis has sent around 10 experts to provide assistance. It may take several days and possibly even several weeks to resolve the situation.
