Another Day, Another Altercation at Legislative Yuan|

Veterans Affairs Council Minister Feng Shih-kuan attended a legislative interpellation and got into an argument with Kuomintang Legislator Jeng Tian-tsair. The Executive Yuan condemned Jeng's method of questioning after Jeng threw a cup of coffee at Feng. The Transitional Justice Commission, meanwhile, has ordered the Veterans Affairs Council to get rid of 66 "martial law symbols." The council has so far only gotten rid of one.

I am protecting the indigenous community against this horrible treatment.

Kuomintang lawmaker Jeng Tian-tsair and Veteran Affairs Council Minister Feng Shih-kuan nearly came to blows during a legislative interpellation on the 6th.

The two were quickly separated. The council is in a financial dispute with a company owned by an indigenous person, and Jeng was upset the council has refused to comply with a court order to pay the company. Feng says it is the company that owes the council NT$8 million.

You're not God. So, for me to use such harsh words -- we should do our best to find legal means and proceed in accordance with the law.

Other lawmakers told me your arm is injured. That's how I found out. I don't know what happened.

Jeng condemned the council for mistreating the indigenous community, but Feng said former military personnel can't humiliate the council. The Executive Yuan criticized Jeng for his methods. The Transitional Justice Committee is trying to get rid of martial law symbols, and has blasted three specific agencies for slow progress: the Ministry of National Defense, which was tasked with removing 260 items; the Ministry of Education, which was tasked with removing 155; and the council, which was tasked with removing 66. The Ministry of Education has so far removed five and the council one. Asked to address this, Feng got emotional and said statues and busts of Chiang Kai-shek should not be removed.

Go look at why the U.S. military landed at Incheon. There's a MacArthur Park there without any police stationed there. However, everyone is used to it. I see entire families bowing with other families yelling and making a scene. And then, you want have to clean it up. (I didn't know Koreans know how to speak Taiwanese.)

Feng said if he is ordered to remove Chiang's statues, he will fight the order. In response, the commission claimed various popular tourist destinations that want to keep their Chiang statues are lying when they say veterans are against the removal.

As for veterans and your take on that, we respect that. We originally proposed multiple plans, like for example adding explanation plaques as you mentioned.

Feng said the council and Ministry of National Defense stand together on this issue and statues of Chiang cannot be casually removed or destroyed. In response, Democratic Progressive Party lawmakers told Feng the commission is within its legal rights to order the removal. The commission added that it hopes to reach a consensus with the council.
