Man Vandalizes Lukang's Longshan Temple|

On the evening of Nov. 1, a man vandalized Changhua's Lukang Longshan Temple. He wrote the name "Luo Yi-fan" all over the temple with spray paint. After arresting the man, surnamed Hung, police concluded he was suffering from relationship troubles and he may face six months to five years and a fine of NT$500,000 to NT$2 million.

Taking advantage of the dark, a man vandalizes the outer walls of Lukang's Longshan Temple with spray paint. The temple is a national historic site. Witnesses quickly reported the man to the police, but not before damage was done.

There is damage to probably 20-plus areas. (Twenty-plus?) Yes. It's everywhere. You didn't see it.

He probably didn't know how to get his frustrations out and decided to use spray paint.

The man sprayed large characters on the tile walls, wrote a name on an interior room and burner, and sprayed the inside of an arched doorway. The incident occurred at 7 p.m. on the 1st. The man has been arrested and charged with violating the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.

(He faces) six months to five years and a fine of NT$500,000 to NT$2 million.

Police say the man, surnamed Hung, is not local and they don't know why he did this or the meaning of the name he wrote all over the temple. Changhua County cultural affairs officials say most of the damage is to the floor and outer and interior walls.

(We will ask) experts about the use of newer cleaning products and any possible damage. We will probably speak with the Bureau of Cultural Heritage about the restoration.

If it had been the door gods that had been damaged, it would be irreversible. (Fortunately), it's just damage to the walls we're looking at.

The Changhua County Government says it will consult with experts on restoration. Temple officials, meanwhile, say it was fortunate Hung did not damage any doors or paintings and the restoration job won't be too difficult. However, it will beef up security around the temple.
