Former Executive Yuan Secretary General Cho Jung-tai, who's widely considered a supporter for President Tsai Ing-wen, won the election for the new chairperson of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, receiving more than 70 percent of the total votes. However, the voter turnout is only 16.9 percent, the lowest since the year of 2000. Cho will take office on Jan. 9, and his first mission is to prepare for the legislator elections and 2020 Presidential Election.
The voting results show that candidate No.1, Cho Jung-tai, has won the election.
The election results reveals that former Executive Yuan Secretary General Cho Jung-tai has been elected the new chairperson of the ruling DPP. Many middle-generation legislators and heads of cities and counties have expressed support for Cho to lead the party.
I will no longer pay any more attention to the results of the election because starting from now, there are more important tasks ahead, which are the different campaign battles that lead to the 2020 Presidential Election.
Cho won the election with an overwhelming 72.6 percent support rating, defeating You Yinglong, who received 27.4 percent of the votes. However, the voter turnout was only 16.9 percent, the lowest since 2000. Cho was called by his opponent as someone who's in the pro-Tsai Ing-wen faction. Cho said his first task is to prepare for the upcoming 2020 Presidential Election and legislator elections.
The first trip is to the DPP headquarters to prepare our staff members. After that, I will head to the Taichung headquarters to mobilize the staff members there. The goal is to prepare for the legislator elections, scheduled for January 27.
Asked whether he will hold a meeting that focus on the internal politics of the DPP, Cho said that he aims to incorporate the suggestion of Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan, who proposed to hold meetings on internal political reform. Asked whether he will host debates on policies towards China, Cho said he is open to the idea. Cho also commented on receiving less votes than his opponent You Yinglong in Changhua and Taitung County, saying that it is not related to anti-Tsai Ing-wen voters. He also said he will respect the nomination mechanism of the DPP in the 2020 Presidential Election.
