In the recently concluded Taipei mayor election, Ting Shou-chung, candidate from opposition Kuomintang loss to incumbent mayor Ko Wen-je by 3,254. Ting has since applied to recount the votes. After a 7-day process, the result shows that Ting falls behind Ko by 3,567. Ting has filed a lawsuit against the validity of the election. And he hasn't ruled out the possibility of requesting compensation from the Central Election Commission and the Taipei City Election Commission.

After the 7-day long process of vote recount, the Taipei District Court announced the result. The votes for both candidates saw a slight reduction compared to the original number announced at the election. However, the difference between Ting Shou-chung, KMT's candidate for Taipei mayor, and incumbent mayor Ko Wen-je, saw a slight increase. Originally, the two were split by 3,254 votes. After the vote recount, Ting still trails behind Ko, this time by 3,567 votes. The recount also revealed that around 1,800 votes were contentious.

Some of the votes could be voided, and some of voided votes could be deemed effective, or some votes of a given candidate could go to another candidate. But all of the votes must be cleared by us, and we need to be clear which ones are effective and which are voided.

Ting Shou-chung has applied for a vote recount, of which the result shows he still lost. Ko Wen-je said, on the other hand, that he expected the outcome.

I didn't have any one who oversees the votes. He employed some, I didn't have any. Therefore, I already knew that if he were to recount the votes, I'd end up with more votes.

The recount didn't lead to a change of result. The NT$ 4.28 million Ting paid for the recount is then kept by district court. Ting said that, after the recount, he is even more certain that there were major flaws in the recent mayoral election. He has filed a lawsuit regarding the validity of the election, and has not ruled out the possibility of demanding for compensation from the Central Election Commission and the Taipei City Election Commission.

I have confirmed that there have been plenty of issues, such as illegal voting, during the mayoral election. Issues like these have had big impact on the result of the election. The effect is far bigger than the number suggests.

The Taipei mayoral election is going to be further extended. The Taipei District Court has accepted Ting's lawsuit against the election's validity and is looking to set a court date.
