The Statistics of Tainan City Government show over 400,000 foreign tourists visit the city every year. The city government has therefore teamed up with CTBC Business School to launch English language audio guided tours designed in foreigners' perspectives to introduce cultures of major historical sites.
This is Wenchang Pavilion, which is located atop Chihkan Tower in Tainan. People come here to throw divination blocks and pick up Wenchang pens. These actions may be familiar to locals, but to foreigners they are hard to understand. To ensure that foreign visitors to Tainan will be able to understand the significance and history behind major historical sites, the Tainan City Government's Office of English as the Second Official Language and CTBC Business School worked together to launch English language audio guided tours of major historical sites. These tours explain the culture and etiquette associated with these sites from the perspectives of foreigners.
But it's also written by foreigners that have been guided by the local tour guides here, so they have a different perspective. It makes it more accessible for foreigners trying to learn all about the temple and the richness.
Tainan City Government statistics show over 400,000 foreign tourists visit the city's historical sites every year. These sites have rich histories and cultural significance, but oftentimes foreign visitors only end up with a superficial understanding. This is why the city government decided to launch audio guided tours. It asked five foreign students studying at National Cheng Kung University to test the tours on site. People can access the audio tours by scanning QR codes with their phones.
We invited foreign students studying at National Cheng Kung University to Fort Provintia. They hadn't visited it before, because they hadn't been in Taiwan for too long. We asked them to test the audio guided tours. We hope they can help foreigners unfamiliar with Taiwan and Tainan's culture to achieve a better understanding of the culture.

The office has plans for audio guided tours of five sites, including Chihkan Tower, Fort Zeelandia and Eternal Golden Castle. The tours are narrated by a Tainan-based reporter for radio station ICRT. It is hoped these tours will allow foreign visitors to depart with a better understanding of Tainan's historical sites.
