I'll give my speech first, and then I'll comment, okay?

National Taiwan University President-elect Kuan Chung-ming gave a speech to the Chiayi City Council in October. On Nov. 5, he traveled to Yunlin to speak in front of the Yunlin County Council. He spoke about education and culture, as well as NTU. Ten months ago, Kuan was elected president of the university, but the Ministry of Education subsequently rejected the selection. Kuan said if those who were in power at that time remain in power after the upcoming local elections and their attitude of seeking to control the university has not changed, then he will make a decision on his future.

If the situation remains unchanged, I think I will most likely have to make a decision based on my personal growth and whether I want to continue fighting for this position. (So it's possible that you won't fight for this position anymore?) Of course it's a possibility. That is one of the many choices.

Kuan said the results of the upcoming local elections will affect the direction of the next step he takes. He also said he will not get involved with any political elections. In January, NTU's Presidential Search Committee selected Kuan to be the next president. The Ministry of Education then claimed the selection process was flawed and refused to approve Kuan's nomination. Three education ministers have failed to resolve this impasse. The Presidential Search Committee says it cannot offer an opinion on whatever Kuan's decision will be, and reiterated the autonomy of the university.

The Presidential Search Committee acts according to law, so we have never changed our position and we insist on university autonomy.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education commented it will respect an Executive Yuan review committee's deliberation process and decisions regarding the lawsuits filed over this case. It also urged the Presidential Selection Committee to convene and fix the flaws in the selection process.
