Writer Ethan Gutmann, author of "The Slaughter", recently described Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je as a "liar". Ko subsequently demanded an apology within 24 hours but did not get a response. On Oct. 4, Ko's lawyer filed a slander lawsuit, and Ko lamented the effects of this controversy on organ transplants and acute medicine.
A lawyer representing Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je files a slander lawsuit against "The Slaughter: Mass Killings, Organ Harvesting, and China's Secret Solution to Its Dissident Problem" author Ethan Gutmann. The basis of the lawsuit was a statement Gutmann made during a recent press conference. He described Ko as a "liar." The attorney said "liar" is an extremely grave accusation, especially for politicians as their reputation and integrity are the baseline.
This is a political smear tactic, and a slaughter of medical science and transparency. If this is not a slaughter of Taiwan's medical treatment and Ko Wen-je's personal integrity, then what is slaughter?
This controversy came with less than two months before the 2018 local elections, where Ko is seeking re-election. Ko spent the past two days expressing his anger. On Oct. 4, he decided to take legal action. He said these developments will severely impact organ transplants and acute treatment.
It's now in a court of law for handling. I heard that he only said the word "liar" during the press conference and not anything else.
Meanwhile, the publishing house responsible for publishing the Chinese version of "The Slaughter" said it will file charges against Ko for homicide and other crimes next week.
There are too many crimes that he can be charged with, including violating the Physicians Act, and even inciting homicide. We will have final discussions today and Friday, so we won't file the lawsuit until next week.
Gutmann was originally scheduled to speak before the legislature's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee on Oct 4. The visit was canceled due to this ongoing controversy, the sensitive timing and the unwillingness of legislators to discuss the controversy.
