To prevent severe traffic congestion during the upcoming Mid-Autumn long weekend, the government has ordered 15 long-distance bus companies to offer discounts on 88 routes to encourage public transportation use, with the average discount of 15 percent. People will also be offered discounts if they transfer to local buses from a public long-distance transport.
People traveling to Yilan wait in line to board the bus. The Directorate General of Highways has rolled out a series of measures to lower traffic volume on National Freeway No. 5 during the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend. It has ordered transport companies to bolster their staffing and offer discounts on fares. For example, a ticket from Taipei to Luodong normally costs NT$ 128. The discounted price during the holiday will be NT$ 105.
Hsuehshan Tunnel is always congested now. If you want to travel to Yilan, you can use public transportation, which is cheaper.
Buses will depart every one to two minutes. We can guarantee passengers will be able to get on buses within 12 minutes of arriving at major depots.
The DGH says there will be discounts on 88 routes during the holiday. The average discount is 15 percent, and the number of available discounts is more than during the past Dragon Boat Festival long weekend. The savings on a one-way ticket from Banqiao to Tainan will be NT$ 100. There are also additional measures to encourage people to use public transportation. People who transfer to local buses from long-distance buses, Taiwan Railways Administration trains or the high speed rail will be able to enjoy one free ride.
The transfer rate from Taiwan Railways Administration and buses that travel on freeways to local buses (during the Mid-Autumn Festival long weekend) is around 4.2 percent. The major transfer hubs are all areas with developed local public transportation, such as New Taipei City, Taoyuan or Keelung.
As the transfer rate is quite low, the DGH says it will continue to adjust policies to encourage people to make more use of public transportation. It will also instruct local governments on how to adjust bus schedules to ensure they conform to rail or long-distance bus schedules, thereby increasing their usage.
