Taiwan is due for a new National ID card design. The ministry had asked the public to come up with ideas and has received more than a thousand designs. The winner, has not been chosen yet, and the ministry will hold an online vote to let the public decide.
The first generation National ID Card was released in 1947, with very dated design and had personal fingerprint on it. The third generation ID card added protective coating, was reduced in size, and had different color schemes for different genders. The different color setting was cancelled until the sixth generation. The current generation National ID card is claimed to have 21 different anti-fraud mechanisms built in. However, there have been cases where fraud IDs were produced.
The anti-fraud symbol can sometimes be deciphered and duplicated. Therefore, for security purposes, it is necessary to upgrade the ID card after a given period.
In the past, the National ID Card underwent a major upgrade every 10 years. The current generation ID card has been in use for over a decade, however, and there is yet a concrete plan to come up with a new design. The Ministry of the Interior recently held a design contest and has collected over 1,000 design samples, and will use them as reference for the design of the next ID card.
The Ministry of the Interior (MOI) still reserves the right to modify any design. MOI wants to merge the National ID Card and the Natural Person ID into one single ID card. It is just a proposal at this point in the initial planning stage.
There have been rumors that the new ID card will no longer show a person's gender nor spouse's name. The ministry said that no concrete decision has been made at this stage, nor have they decided whether or not to add an anti-fraud chip inside the new ID card. When we look the latest ID card design, including the ones from Spain, Malaysia, South Korea, they have all implemented anti-fraud chips inside. On the other hand, the ID card of the Philippines and Peru has the same design as Taiwan's current ID card.
There have been too many fake ID card cases. It would be helpful in implementing a chip in the new ID card.
The Ministry of the Interior said that the top priority in the design of the new ID card is to enhance security. The ministry also rejected rumors that the new ID card will integrate the function of the national healthcare card.
