KO'S SHOW OF RESPECT AND DIGNITY MAY BE THE CROSS-STRAITS THIRD WAY|尊重但不承認"九二共識" 柯兩岸交流新模式

Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je says his trip to Shanghai helped break the current deadlock across the Strait, but Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council says Beijing took the opportunity of Ko's visit to push forward its unification agenda. Observers say China seems to be okay with the ambivalent stance that Ko takes regarding the 1992 consensus, and this could be a new viable model for cross-Strait exchange down the road. On July 3, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je met with China's Taiwan Affairs Office Minister Zhang Zhijun in Shanghai, both of them made remarks on the two sides of the strait being 'one family with a shared fate' and as cross strait relations are at a new low, Ko's performance at the two cities forum seems to have broken constraints. ==KO WEN-JE Taipei City Mayor== Zhang Zhijun wanted to talk about the 92 consensus with me, I know that is what he has to talk about , if he didn't he would lose his position, out of respect and dignity I replied to him, but Taiwan's position is this. Using 'broken the deadlock' to describe his Shanghai visit, even though the China's Taiwan Affairs Office still mentioned the 1992 consensus, Ko expressed understanding and respect, did not deny the consensus, and was able to effect some cross strait exchange. In the current low ebb of cross strait relations, this has garnered much attention. The Mainland Affairs Council issued a statement, excoriating the 'one family on two sides of the strait' and 'shared destiny' phrases which, according to it, are unilateral political propositions, manipulations and unification rhetoric. It says that these will not help the positive development of cross-strait relations or peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. ==LIN CHENG-YI MAC Vice Minister== Their unilateral advocacy manipulating unification rhetoric, while at the same time depriving Taiwan of international space and presenting obstacles to the improvement of cross strait relations. Ko's method of cross-strait exchange may become a new model for the Tsai government. Analysts say China held the two cities forum as a high-profile event, highlighting the political rise of Ko. ==FAN SHIH-PING Prof., NTNU Political Research Institute== Through local activities they can encourage Tsai and the central administration that the 92 consensus is good, I understand and respect it, but I don't have to promise anything, for DPP city and county heads this is a way out, they don't have to acknowledge the 92 consensus, so Ko's method could be a third way, there is not much room for flexibility, so may as well use the Ko model. Recently, many DPP city and county leaders expressed their views on cross-strait relations, and in the future, local government and China exchanges are likely to take place. Ko's attitude towards the 1992 consensus may also be a new bottom line for cross-strait exchanges, should the Chinese accept it.
