KO: TWO SIDES OF THE STRAIT AS A 'COMMUNITY OF COMMON DESTINY'|2017雙城論壇登場 柯P提"命運共同體"

The Taipei-Shanghai twin city forum took place on July 2 in Shanghai. Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je and Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong both spoke of Taiwan and China as "a family" in their respective remarks, and both touched on the idea of the two sides as part of a "community of common destiny."Ko had previously spoken of "two countries, one system" as his ideal model for cross-strait relations. When asked what has changed, Ko said that he simply wants people to enjoy better lives right now, and that for him this is a matter of pragmatism in politics. Four memorandums of understanding were signed between the two sides during the forum, which focused on the topic of healthy cities. In their remarks, both mayors said that Taiwan and China are one family and belong to a "community of common destiny." ==YING YONG Mayor of Shanghai== The compatriots on the two sides of the strait are one family, one indivisible community of common destiny. There should be more engagement, exchanges, and cooperation between the two sides. In this amiable family-like atmosphere, the friendship and love between the public of the two sides should deepen. ==KO WEN-JE Mayor of Taipei== If everyone can aim to improve the welfare of the people, keeping in mind the idea that the two sides are one family, strengthen cross-strait exchanges and cooperation, and build a community of common destiny so that the two sides can pursue a better future for the people in concert, then the current stalemate can be broken. Ko had once spoken of "two countries, one system" as his ideal model for the cross-strait relations. When asked what had spurred the change in his rhetoric, Ko said that his goal was simply to make people's lives better, and that the change was only pragmatic politics. The Presidential Office issued a statement saying that, in this difficult time for Taiwan's diplomacy, leaders should express the opinion of the Taiwanese people as appropriate in exchanges such as this. Ko said that the opportunity given by the forum to bring Taiwan's street dance groups to Shanghai was an excellent example. ==KO WEN-JE Mayor of Taipei== By bringing a Taiwan street dance group here, we brought Taiwan to the world. I think this is a great example of bringing Taiwanese public opinion to the world. It is better for the two sides to be "one family" than to be mortal enemies. This is my first point. My second point is, if our cooperation is effective, then we should cooperate. If it is not effective, then we should re-evaluate, right? High school dancers showed each other their skills by the Huangpu River. Ko said that this was a metaphor for the cross-strait relationship, that it is good to learn from each other. Ko said before leaving for Shanghai that this was simply a city exchange event, but he has repeatedly engaged with the cross-strait issue on this trip. Whether he is trying to forge his own path against the background of the cross-strait stalemate remains to be seen.
