First in today's international news, two explosions killed dozens over the weekend in the Somali capital Mogadishu and Bogota, Columbia. In Mogadishu, a suicide car bomb ripped through a local market, killing at least 34 and injuring about 50.
The incident took place just days after the country elected a new president. Eyewitnesses described feeling shocked after seeing the bomb detonated at the center of the market and people crying in pain. Al Shabaab, the Islamist insurgent group that is fighting the U.N.-backed Somali government, did not immediately claim responsibility. Meanwhile the explosion in Bogota, Columbia led to 1 death and at least 30 were injured, most of them police officers as they prepared for anti-bullfighting protests. Media images showed debris in the road, broken glass and damage to apartment buildings close by. Recently, hundreds of protesters have gathered weekly to demonstrate against bullfighting in Bogota, which resumed last month for the first time in four years. It has not been confirmed if the blast was linked to the protests.
