Officials pay respects to officer killed chasing drunk driver / 追緝酒駕女警殉職 內政部長赴靈堂致哀　　　　　　　　　　

On November 1, Taoyuan city police officer Chen Ming-hui suffered serious head injuries in a car crash while chasing a drunk driver. She was pronounced dead on November 4 after three days of emergency treatment. On November 5, Interior Minister Yeh Jiunn-rong and National Police Administration Director General Chen Kuo-en paid tribute to the officer at a funeral hall. Chen's sister criticized the light punishment for drunk-driving on her Facebook, asking President Tsai Ing-wen to address the problem. After three days of emergency treatment, Chen Ming-hui, a police officer in Taoyuan, was pronounced dead on November 4. The 31-year-old officer's police car crashed while pursuing a drunk driver, causing her to suffer serious head injuries. Her death has prompted people to call on the government to impose harsher penalties on those who are convicted of drink-driving. Chen's sister said that the punishment for drink driving was so lenient in Taiwan that it does not have a deterrent effect. Therefore, no one seems to take drink-driving seriously. Chen Min-hsiang, the founder of the Taiwan Against Drunk Driving association who lost her daughter due to a drink driving accident three years ago, also thinks that heavier sentences are necessary to prevent such accidents. Under the current law, drink-driving offenders can get off with only paying fines up to NT$90,000, which means nothing to most offenders. Civil groups urged legislators to propose amendments to the Criminal Code. They asked those who are in the same car with the drunk driver to take joint liability. They also advised the government to enhance public education on drink-driving to avoid such tragedies.
