After the Tainan Earthquake, structural damage has led to leaking at an 80-year-old swimming pool in Pingtung. After surveying the site, experts found that the pool's foundation has been weakened and could potentially affect the Confucius Temple next door. Now it seems like demolition is the only choice left for the swimming pool. As it's the first swimming pool in the area, local residents are sad to see it go. Hot summer heats make many people want to dip into waters. But Pingtung County Swimming Pool has been shut down for over five months. ==CHEN TI-YUAN, Pingtung County Stadium Administration Center== Because waters have weights, and the pool had been raised up and its foundation. It leaks, even if we make repairs, the pool could leak again. We have safety concerns over it. This is not an ordinary swimming pool. It was built back in Japanese colonial period, and it is 80 years old. It was the only pool in Pingtung back in that time. However the pool suffered from serious structural damages due to the big earthquake in February. Also the pool is next to historical site Confucius Temple, therefore the county government decided to demolish the pool. ==Resident== They were planning to make it an exercise area for seniors, now it's going to be gone. (Do you pity it?) Of course, it was just repaired, and now to demolish it. What a pity. No more pool for elders to swim. What a pity, residents said. Although there are several private centers and swimming pools, residents have to pay at least NT$100, it's quite a burden to them.
