ChatGPT Poses Academic Issues ChatGPT
ChatGPT is the talk of online users everywhere, but many are concerned that students will use the chatbot to generate essays and college application portfolios, affecting the fairness of college recruitment.
ChatGPT can be used to analyze data, generate content or reports, or create educational documents.
Ms. Lee, Student, Affiliated Senior High School of NTNU: “It's kind of like using someone else's work as a reference. There's still a mental journey. What I mean is you still have to have your own thoughts. So, I'd still rewrite my paper.”
Ms. Lin, Student, Affiliated Senior High School of NTNU: “You still have to do your own work, or else you won't know how to answer when your teacher asks you about your paper.”
Some high school students say they may use ChatGPT as a reference, while others say they wouldn't use ChatGPT at all. Nevertheless, the chatbot has the ability to generate an entire essay just from a keyword that can be turned in with a few quick edits.
Lee Chi-lung, Director, Computer Lab, Affiliated Senior High School of NTNU: “It's like building a model house. It gets a general idea but is lacking details. So, we still hope that students can take the time to learn the background and the details to identify problems rather than relying on this kind of tool.”
Student portfolios are a critical part of university applications. ChatGPT can be used to quickly generate content, write and edit essays, and look up information. However, some say the chatbot will have a negative effect on the fairness of written reviews.
Willie Yang, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Information Management, NTU: “The first thing we do (with student portfolios) verifies your teacher and key coursework list. This isn't all that accurate even now. (During your interview), the teacher will ask you questions about what you wrote. Students can use chatbots to write a first draft, but you have to understand the content of the paper you turn in.”
Experts say ChatGPT isn't perfect and student portfolios are looked at in conjunction with written and oral exam scores. Therefore, ChatGPT can be used as a tool but students can't be completely dependent on it.
