Taiwan Nation Alliance Refuses to Work With Taipei Mayor
Taiwan Nation Alliance announced that they will not be holding the Feb. 28 incident event this year with the Taipei City Government because family members of victims do not want to be seen together with mayor Chiang Wan-an on stage.
Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an recently visited the Taipei Songshan Elementary School to see how the students and teachers interact in class. As the end of February is approaching, a great deal of political attention is falling on the yearly Feb. 28 incident memorial event, which the Taipei City Government has been holding with the Taiwan Nation Alliance for many years. However, the alliance said straight out that they would not be holding the event with the Taipei City Government this year since families of the Feb. 28 victims could not imagine being on stage with the perpetrator's descendant.
Li Pang-fu, Director, Taiwan Nation Alliance: “Everyone should know who Chang Yen-hsien is. He had written a research report that aimed to attribute responsibility regarding the 228 Incident. The report clearly pointed to Chiang Kai-shek as the main culprit behind the Feb. 28, so why should we, as victims, be holding the memorial event with our perpetrator?”
In response to how Chiang Kai-shek should be regarded in history, Mayor Chiang simply said "let history be history." He is asking the central government to reveal all historical files and information so people can learn more about the incident and hopefully foster reconciliation in society.
Chiang Wan-an, Taipei City Mayor: “We just do our best to listen to the family members and hear what they have to say. We hope to do whatever we can, on the level of city governance; we won't dodge.”
Taipei Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-hua said the Department of Cultural Affairs under the city government has been the main organizer for years, and it is the city government's earnest hope to continue carrying out the event, to march forward with everyone involved. They will make sure to arrange the event the best they could. Lin stressed that Chiang is the head of all Taipei City residents and he will definitely show his sincerity as the mayor.
