Legislators Demand Thorough Report for NPM's Treasures Case
Legislators continue to question how the National Palace Museum handled the recent breakages of three artefacts from the Ming and Qing dynasties. NPP legislator Claire Wang went to the museum, demanded a thorough investigation report and requested for the surveillance video footage. KMT legislator Chen I-shin asked the Executive Yuan to form a special task force.
Three national treasures that date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties stored at the National Palace Museum were found damaged for the past two consecutive years. Four screenshots of staff examining broken treasure pieces from the surveillance video footage were shown by the National Palace Museum in a preliminary investigation report. However, New Power Party (NPP) legislator Claire Wang said according to the tip they had received, the treasures were broken due to staff negligence. Wang requested the museum to release a complete investigation report and surveillance video footage.
Claire Wang, Legislator (NPP): “According to what they said, two were found damaged when the packaging was opened, and they released and offered us the same report as well. Shouldn’t they show everyone the full video so that everyone can be very clear about how the artifacts were found broken when the staff opened the box? They shouldn’t just give us a report on paper to explain. Because we did receive information from someone indicating that the damage was likely caused by negligence.”
NPP legislators said the National Palace Museum should set up a more effective reporting mechanism and improve preservation measures and upgrade the storage environment. KMT legislator Chen I-shin accused the museum of attempting to cover up the incidents and asked the Executive Yuan to form a special task force to find out the truth.
Su Tseng-chang, Premier: “Why did the on-spot pictures disappear? The photo that we see of the yellow teacup with two green dragons, was taken at a later time. Did they hide the on-spot pictures? Why did the whole administrative investigation take more than three months?”
Chen I-shin, Legislator (KMT): “I think the Palace Museum should give us a clearer explanation, like what the truth is and who should be responsible for the damage. The nation deserves to know. I will also try to find out what actually happened.”
Premier Su Tseng-chang is also calling on the museum to offer a clearer explanation and he will decide on whether a special task force is needed for the investigation.
