President Tsai Ing-wen met with a delegation sent by the Biden administration on March 2. She kicked off the meeting by thanking the US for sending this delegation on a visit despite the tense situation resulting from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. She added that it highlights how much the US values its relationship with Taiwan and how important Taiwan's role is in international and regional security. Tsai also called on democratic countries to unite.

Tsai Ing-wen, President: “In the face of the threat to the Taiwan Strait and regional security, we hope for closer cooperation with all parties in the US region to jointly inhibit all types of unilateral actions that can affect security and maintain regional peace and stability.”

Tsai warned that the military threat posed by China to the Taiwan Strait and the region continues to get bigger, and there is also the threat of fake news. She said Taiwan is determined to defend itself and it of course hopes to continue cooperating with the US. There has been talk that the US is ready to abandon Taiwan. Former US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen guaranteed the US will honor its commitments.

Mike Mullen, Former US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman: “That's why the United States will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo and will continue to support a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues. I do hope by being here with you, we can reassure you and your people, as well as our allies and partners in the region, that the United States stands firm behind its commitments.”

Mullen said the visit came at a critical moment for the world, and democracy needs to be defended now more than ever. He also passed along a message from both major US parties about their determination to support Taiwan, saying upholding the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait will not only benefit the US but also the entire world.
